The Inflection Points
A major inflection point is that convergence of moment and circumstances that present an opportunity to move the wheel that alters the course of history.
The American recovery will be accomplished over a decade through a number of these inflection points. The simple awareness of these fulcra, the lever-points of change, the informed sense of when and where they present themselves, is the key to power – to do good or ill. Our ignorance or neglect of these key opportunities has resulted in being gamed and will continue to do so until we wake up.
The ruthlessly determined, self-styled progressives who have captured political liberalism always think in terms of the exploitation of crises (as in “never let a crisis go to waste”). A perfect example of that phenomenon was when John McCain – never much of an economist – was caught completely off guard by the 2008 credit crash. This allowed Barack Obama, the one half-term junior senator from Illinois – never much of an economist, but one hell of a progressive manipulator – to seize the stage, and the election, in that order. …A key inflection point.
If you take nothing else away from this essay, just repeat the following mantra to yourself: “Yes, we were asleep at the switch, but never again…”
Here’s the problem to be solved over the next few months. Our beloved, beleaguered country has no effective leader because the president has squandered all the remaining trust afforded his office. …And the opposition has no single leader at all.
To paraphrase the Clinton campaign against Bush the First, “It’s the trust thing, stupid.”
An election is not an inflection point so much as it is the report card on previous inflection points seized or missed. Opportunities do not present themselves in a neat, logical order, but, well…opportunistically. So the game goes to those with a fairly detailed agenda, any part of which is ready for deployment at a moment’s notice. So far the conservative opposition’s agenda has consisted mostly in fog-ball sound-bites, bromides like “beware big government”. Somebody up there most love the opposition because the confluence of scandals actually lends itself to the rhetorical flourish. But rhetoric merely sets up the public of concrete solutions, without which you will soon hear a series of pops, the sounds of trust and hope bubbles popping.
As I’ve already written, the larger issue is the toxic entanglement of politics-infested government with far too many aspects of our lives, starting with commerce but ending – as long as the progressive mindset runs unchecked – nowhere. And the solution is just like that of the landlord (in this case, the American people) with a bad tenant: A thorough house-cleaning, followed by eviction.
The IRS scandal and the NSA scandal have similar roots: We need security and revenue, but only when the institutions that operate these vital functions can be completely trusted. Mr. Obama has done possibly irreparable damage to the republic by gutting public trust in the vital institutions of government at a time when we deserve and desperately need something much, much better.
Dear friends, readers and correspondents, here is your assignment:
IDENTIFY THE FOUR NEXT MAJOR INFLECTION POINTS AT WHICHTHE OPPOSITION CAN MOVE THE WHEEL IN THE DIRECTION OF MORE ORDERED LIBERTY, A SANER, FREER USA.
[Hint A– the next bubble is the monetary one, but when it breaks and what leadership will then be available is a crap shoot.]
[Hint B – the next inflection points will take place before the 2014 midterms and may seem like small opportunities easily missed. ]
