Why support Israel?
Michael Filozof speaks for me.
Jay B Gaskill
More than any time in recent history, Israel needs a friend. And more than any other time in recent history, there is no effective friend of Israel in the White House. I have frequently self-identified as a “Truman democrat”.
“Give ‘em hell Harry”, whatever his other merits or demerits, was alone among world leaders in his solid support for the modern state of Israel in very the moment of her founding, and our new president, whatever his merits or demerits, is alone among American presidents in his abject failure to support the modern state of Israel, possibly in the very moment of its final crisis.
On the foreign policy front, Mr. Obama is the anti-Truman.
Here’s pull quote from Filozof’s piece in the American Thinker, a highly recommended piece.
“If you prize civilization and oppose anarchy, you support Israel, even if it has to utilize Inspector Callahan’s methods. Israel is the Hadrian’s Wall of the West — on the other side of it, civilization ends. Anyone who were forced into exile and had the choice of going to Damascus, Baghdad, Tripoli, or Tel Aviv would be out of their mind to choose anything but the actually last one. But that’s not a choice that anti-Israel partisans on the Left have to make.”
When Israel was attacked in the summer of 2006, I wrote:
As a Judeo-Christian, I firmly believe in the right of the State of Israel to thrive in peace within defensible borders. As a moral realist, I understand what the actual conditions of survival entail when you are living amid a sea of resentment-intoxicated peoples, temporarily unhinged by a malevolent ideology masquerading as a religion of peace.
Therefore, I must completely dissociate myself from the pacifist strain of Christianity that has repeatedly called for Israel to retreat, to refrain from proactive self defense and ultimately … to risk immolation.
These otherwise good hearted souls are deeply confused.
My other thoughts as they have leaked out over the last several years:
Never again – Not my problem
Why do so many liberals waffle on Israel?
Yes there was a holocaust and the Iranian president wants one more… http://jaygaskill.com/blog2/2009/09/yes_there_was_a_holocaust_and.html

Israel is condemned by elites for self defense…once more
A Footnote – I wrote this once, in response to an email exchange.
Civilizations are never perfect, just better than humanity’s “nasty, short and brutal” barbarism models. And civilization’s armed protectors remain blunt instruments, a characteristic easily exploited by cunning enemies who are capable of purposefully embedding innocent civilians within military targets in order to produce a PR victory.
The defense of civilization needs to be careful and prudent, but a degree of ruthlessness is unavoidable. Suppose we had imposed the ‘rules of engagement’ advocated by Israel’s critics on the allies in WWII: We’d all be speaking German …and Hebrew would be absolutely verboten.
